The History of the PlaceThrough the Centuries
Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte and Queen Hortense:
In 1804, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, brother of Emperor Napoleon I and future King of Holland, acquired the two châteaux of Saint-Leu. After demolishing the older one, he settled in the Château du Bas with his young wife, Hortense de Beauharnais. Located on the hillside, the property was to become “one of the most beautiful imperial residences.”
The château, now gone, was surrounded by a park of over 80 hectares. Today, marked trails at the edge of the forest allow visitors to imagine the imperial gardens, “In the footsteps of Queen Hortense.”
