The History of the PlaceThrough the Centuries

In the Île-de-France region, mills are plentiful — particularly in Yvelines (78). The Richebourg Mill is part of an architectural ensemble dating back to the medieval period. Over the centuries, the buildings were expanded and restored until the 19th century. The Richebourg Mill is mentioned in the Port Royal cartulary (13th century). The entire estate was donated in 1206 to the Abbey of Port Royal by the Bishop of Paris. The mills produced flour and also contributed to tile production.

It is said that the monks of Bazainville diverted the Salceron River that runs through Richebourg to power the mills more efficiently. Such alterations to the landscape were unregulated at the time, and landowners freely redirected waterways as they pleased. In Richebourg, the human influence is still visible today in the sharp angles and bends of the river’s path.

In 1745, Count de Cossé-Brissac — Lieutenant General of the King’s Armies under Louis XV and High Justice of Saulx-Richebourg — became the owner of the château, the farm, and the mill. He increased the Sausseron’s flow and built the Honnins washhouse.

By 1750, a notarial record notes that the mill had two wheels and four grindstones, demonstrating the Sausseron’s importance in the 18th century.

Its flow decreased with the rise of the Industrial Revolution and the construction of the Avre Aqueduct in 1893, which supplies Paris with drinking water. The project’s chief engineer was none other than Fulgence Bienvenüe, one of the founders of the Paris Metro. As a result, the mill’s activity quickly ceased due to the reduced water power and the advent of new industrial milling technologies.

Today, the Richebourg Mill is experiencing a renaissance — life has returned to the heart of this remarkable piece of rural heritage.

1206

First mention of the Richebourg Mill in the Port Royal cartulary, following a donation from Eudes, Bishop of Paris, to the Abbey of Port Royal.

1743

Upon the death of Jean Lesprillier, a notarial act describes the great mill’s wheel as the largest in Seine-et-Oise, with an 8-meter drop and a flow regulation system.

1745

Count de Cossé-Brissac becomes the owner of the Richebourg Mill and undertakes works to increase the Sausseron’s flow, also creating the Honnins washhouse.

1893

Inauguration of the Avre Aqueduct, which drastically reduced the Sausseron’s flow and forced local mills to cease operation.

1954

The Richebourg Mill becomes the private residence of the Vidal family, who develop a park with around fifty trees of various species.

2024

Restoration of the long-abandoned mill by Pierres d’Histoire.

What Our Guests Say

Asmae M

A wonderful stay in this charming estate. The house was equipped with everything we needed and beautifully decorated. The pool, sports fields, and all the outdoor amenities meant we never got bored for a single second. And the peaceful countryside, less than an hour from Paris, was absolutely divine. We met Joëlle, the host of the estate, who is an amazing person — she made sure we had everything we needed throughout our stay and was always available. Thank you again for your warm welcome. There’s a lovely bike ride to do in the area, and shops are not far away (5 to 10 minutes by car). We can’t wait to come back.

Romain Benard

A wonderful stay at Domaine de Richebourg. The place is beautiful, in the heart of the countryside and so peaceful. The site is not yet fully finished, but that doesn’t take away from the pleasure of being there. We booked the Atelier for a romantic getaway — it was perfect with its little private terrace/garden and its beautifully decorated attic bedroom. Tastefully designed, it’s the perfect place for a real break away from Paris. There’s a heated pool, a sports field, and even a pétanque court for activities. Houdan is a lovely town to visit too! Many thanks to the hosts, who were very friendly and helpful. Note: the 11 houses available are generally family-oriented, so there may be many people and lots of children — something to keep in mind for couples seeking absolute peace and quiet :) As a result, community rules are not always strictly followed.

Antoine Ottavy

A wonderful place to discover! A former mill completely renovated while retaining its original charm. Plenty of activities to enjoy on site — cycling, swimming, and a sports field! A special mention for the breakfast basket delivered right to the door in the morning 👍 The estate manager is very attentive and always available.

Jean-Bapt. Picquart

Beautifully decorated accommodation with top-quality facilities. Complete disconnection in the park, with its magnificent flora and fauna. We hosted wonderful gatherings, as the kitchen is so well equipped. I highly recommend this peaceful and welcoming place.

Olivia Pulcet

We discovered PdH two years ago while staying at the Hôtel de Tingry in the Luberon. We were won over by the quality of the welcome, the enhancement of the historic buildings, and the perfect balance between authenticity and comfort. We wanted to repeat the experience this year at Domaine de Richebourg. It was a great opportunity to discover the region. Each estate has its own personality, yet the same high standards in restoration, attention to detail, and an atmosphere that is both convivial and refined. It’s a wonderful way to travel — discovering a region through its heritage.

Magnificent estate! A beautiful renovation that brings real value to the village of Richebourg. Reviving such a beautiful and historic building is quite an achievement. The roof, visible from the road and surrounding paths, is stunning and respects the local colors. Nature is sublime in Richebourg — at the heart of the mill, the water is crystal clear.

Julien Temim

A huge thank you for this wonderful weekend. We were warmly welcomed in a charming setting, tastefully decorated and full of thoughtful touches. The peace, comfort, and kindness of Marina, Christian, and Joëlle allowed us to truly disconnect. We keep wonderful memories of this weekend at the Moulin de Richebourg — a place we will cherish and recommend without hesitation!

Amy B

A magical escape for a weekend. A guaranteed change of scenery just 45 minutes from Paris. The mill has been renovated with great taste and care while preserving its rustic charm. The kitchen is particularly well equipped, and the staff is very attentive. We will return without hesitation.

Pascal P

I spent a wonderful weekend at the Moulin. The place is perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation. The house was spacious and comfortable, ideal for welcoming a family, and built with high-quality materials — perfect for a stay combining heritage and nature. A large park bordered by several streams, open views of the surrounding countryside, a warm welcome on site with plenty of advice about walks and local visits, the village of Houdan just 5 minutes away by car, many great restaurants in the area, wine cellar tours, flea markets, and Normandy just a short drive away. I highly recommend it and look forward to coming back with my family!
