The history of the placeThrough the centuries

The Hôtel de Tingry was built in the 17th century by Joseph Balthazard des Laurents, whose family—of Piedmontese origin—was among the most powerful and influential in Avignon. He made the Hôtel his secondary residence. His descendant, Eléonore Pulchérie des Laurents, married Charles Montmorency-Luxembourg, Prince of Tingry, who gave the residence its name. An aristocratic retreat, its exclusivity stemmed from the richness of its surroundings—near vineyards, the exceptional landscapes of the Luberon, and the picturesque center of Ménerbes.

The Hôtel de Tingry later became, for thirteen years, the personal residence of American art patron Nancy Negley. Upon the death of her neighbor Dora Maar, Nancy purchased her house to preserve her memory, later turning it into an artist residency.

Since 1989, the Hôtel de Tingry has been listed as a Historic Monument. The architecture of this residence is remarkable: it features a beautiful porch, and its courtyard was once paved with pebbles from the Durance River. In this typical Provençal village, many 18th-century townhouses and restored ancient residences still bear witness to the prominence of the former nobility.

      1781-1789

The Princess of Tingry offered asylum to Count de Rantzau, Captain of the Guards of King Christian VII of Denmark. The Count had fled Denmark after taking part in a plot against Queen Caroline Mathilde. His tomb can be found in the Citadel garden.

The Hôtel de Tingry was listed as a Historic Monument.

      1990

The Hôtel de Tingry became, for 13 years, the private residence of Nancy Negley, an American philanthropist and great patron of the arts. Upon the death of her neighbor Dora Maar, Nancy purchased her home to preserve her memory and later turned it into an artist’s residence.

      Nathalie de Palmas

      Anna Kloots

An absolutely magical experience here with my parents. It felt like sneaking into a stunning home and traveling back to the 17th century. The rooms are huge and beautifully decorated in a period style. It has that warm, ‘European restoration’ feel — not overdone or perfect like a new hotel, and that’s exactly its charm. I booked two of the four rooms — Nancy and Eleanor — and it was perfect, with their own private area across from a book-filled lounge. Common spaces include a large library, a cozy living room, a gorgeous dining room, and a vintage kitchen where breakfast awaits you every morning (some of the best croissants I’ve ever had!). Even the broom closet is charming — I’m not kidding, take a peek! There’s no staff on-site, which makes it feel like you’re living there by chance, but despite that, everything you could need is provided, from Wi-Fi to sunhats and umbrellas. Located on a cobblestone street at the top of the hill (not ideal for those with mobility issues), it offers stunning views from its massive windows. The fresh jasmine growing everywhere even gives it a heavenly scent. If you love adventure and antiques, this is the place for you.
